Mollie Douthit | Grand Forks Herald
Grand Forks native Mollie Douthit has opened her first solo show at Ecce Gallery, 208 Roberts Alley, Fargo.
The exhibition, titled “New Works,” consists of 21 oil paintings, primarily on panels. It opened Sept. 5 and runs through Oct. 21.
Douthit’s paintings capture images of ordinary, everyday objects and situations that have special meaning for her and evoke memories and emotion.
“Painting provides a meditation on those subjects and permits me to better see, understand and transcribe my life,” Douthit said in an artist’s statement that accompanies the collection.
“My work is a visual diary of my life,” she said, noting that she uses paint “in a way that feels like writing.”
Douthit, who lives in Grand Forks, was the fourth artist to be selected for the “Art Makers Series” at the North Dakota Museum of Art on the UND campus. Her show, “Mollie Douthit: Paintings,” was on display for several weeks in the summer of 2017.
The series is a means of introducing museum visitors to regional artists who appear to be on the verge of a breakthrough, said Laurel Reuter, NDMOA director.
A 2004 graduate of Red River High School, Douthit earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at UND and went on to study at Boston’s School of Museum of Fine Arts. She also received a fellowship to study at the Burren College of Art in Ireland.
Mike Marth | Plains Art Museum Solo Exhibition
This is Not a Still Life explores the multiple dimensions of Moorhead (MN)-based artist Mike Marth’s artwork and its remarkable evolution. Exhibiting a mastery of materials, Marth’s work is often formal in nature, emphasizing its inherent qualities of form, style, symbolism, and texture. In 2000 Plains Art Museum exhibited a solo exhibition of Marth’s work titled A Decade of Still Life featuring his early work. This work consisted of painterly and sculptural pieces deconstructing the tradition of still life painting. Since then, Marth’s work has progressed in a variety of directions – often transforming industrial and organic material into surprising inventions and wide-ranging forms.
Join us for the summer exhibition reception on July 12, 7 – 9pm.
